The Ever Growing Importance of Organic Gardening

There is a growing movement towards people wanting to live sustainable and healthy lives. For many people this movement starts in the garden, and moves in to the kitchen and the household. There are simple ways that you can garden organically and start your journey towards a happier and healthier lifestyle.

Organic gardening has always been important but now organic gardeners are being viewed as conscious and considerate as opposed to a hippy or ethnic. During the war people grew their own food out of necessity then at the start of the 50s there was a shift away from self-adequacy and towards the use of yards as ornamental gardens and pristine lawns. This shift, although seemingly harmless, has caused effects on our soils that are still bearing poisoned fruits of consequence. In the effort to keep these gardens pristine, countless numbers of extremely poisonous and hazardous pesticides and insecticides were used. At the time people were blissfully unaware of the devastating consequences that would result from their use and their residual life in the soil. Not only were they bad chemicals but they were also used incorrectly, allowing pests to build up a resistance to the chemicals. In some instances it completely wiped out beneficial insects, which are natures own way of pest control.

The use of these chemicals almost pinpoints the moment when Australia noticed an influx and problem with red spider mite. It is uncertain whether humans eradicated their natural predator or the mite simply built up resistance to the chemicals. It is also possible and probable that these two factors combined to create the problem. What we do know is that prior to this period there was hardly any record of red spider mite. There is growing awareness of the toxicity and wide spread effect of these pesticides on both our soils and native animals. There is a current petition circulating to put an end to pesticides that are toxic to bees in the UK.

Thankfully sustainability and environmental awareness is exploding into people's lives in the wake of large environmental issues such as global warming, green house gas emissions, coral reef decline, and the list goes on. This shift has been so fundamental that it is almost fashionable to be sustainable and organic. This is a vast improvement from the days of the 1950s – 60s when people were pigeon holed for growing their own food, composting or having worm farms. But what can living and gardening organically offer you? The benefits of organic gardening are endless. From the physical effects of getting out amongst the plants and working in the soil, to the healthier produce that is created from organic techniques, to the knowledge that you can rest easy knowing that you are doing your part even if it is one carrot at a time. This is evident if you have ever ateen a tomato off of a plant while strolling along, the fruit is still warm and the flavor explodes in your mouth. This can not be rivaled by the mass produced fruit available in the stores. The pesticides that are used in conventional gardening, although said to be harmless and degradable, lock up nutrients in the soil in order to become inert. The continued consumption of pesticides can lead to a weakened immune system and as such health defects like ADHD and allergies among a few. Organic food on a molecular level is healthy, supporting superior amounts of antioxidants and macro nutrients and the surrounding environment is abundant with life.

In fact, it is easier because you do not have to buy pesticides or get rid of gardening waste. Organic Food Health Benefits – Top 2 Issues

It is not uncommon to hear claims concern organic food health benefits. Are these claims valid? Is there any scientific ground for making such claims?

There are two main ways to look at this:

1. The presence of toxic chemicals in the food.

2. The nutritional value of the food.

It is a well known fact that all our food these days contains a cocktail of chemicals. These chemicals come from pest control in the crops, from residues in the mineral fertilizers and from additives in the food used during industrial food preparation. There exists some knowledge of the effects of these chemicals on the human biology, but only for one chemical at a time. There have been no studies made on the synergetic effects; as a matter of fact this kind of study is somewhat hard to perform since there are such a vast number of chemicals around.

Accordingly, no one really knows what happens to our bodies when they are exposed to this cocktail of chemicals. Cancer? Neuropsychiatric functional limitation? Low capacity immune system?

When you grow organic food you do not use chemicals for pest control, nor do you use mineral fertilizers. There are some additives allowed when processing organic foods, but most of these are natural substances such as citric acid. Studies have shown lower levels of chemicals in the urine of people eating organic food than in the urine of people eating conventionally grown and handled food. To me this is the most important of the organic food health benefits.

As for nutrition, there are several studies showing a higher nutritional value of organically grown food. This means that if you eat the same amount of vegetables and fruit but switch to organic ones, you will get more of the nutrients your body needs to function properly.

Buy "Farm Fresh", "Organic", and From the Farm Fruits and Vegetables – The Pit Falls Where They May

Funny someone should be writing about this and selling on the internet at the same time, is not it? I mean, why go to all that trouble? Well, because legitimate sentences such as ours suffer from negative reputations created by fly-by-night outfits.

And why would I write it today? Because today I had to get a cease a desist for someone who set up one of these fake farms, they are probably using our customer list and even a franchise name illegally. One down, a hundred to go.

So let's discuss the fruit brokers first although there are three less than legitimate categories:

1. A person who creates a website which looks like a farm because it has the word FARM in the website name, or FARM FRESH.

What you will not find is an address which matches up to a place which look remotely like a farm on Google Maps. Or it will be a PO Box (rare as this is really stupid) – or you will find NO ADDRESS AT ALL.

If they are using someone elses address which is a farm, you have to track the phone number, too. Or go to GoDaddy.com and track their domain name owner. It will show who it's registered to – by name – which gives other leads to sleuth out. It's actually quite easy once you've done it a time or two.

Why is this important? I mean, all you really want is cheap fruit? Well, buyers are more sophisticated today and the Vegan and Organic movement is very large in this country. Also, large organizations such as Slow Foods need legitimate places to shop nationally for members.

So, now you are on probably the worst of the websites you could think of – a fake farm. So where are they getting their fruit? I know this next section is going really shake your faith in online, cheap fruit – even expensive fruit – but there are a number of ways these fake farms procure fruit.

1. Out of backyards from neighbors – so you better not be ordering and paying for "organic" as no resident can grow organic that is verifiable. This includes just harvesting off an overhanging limb in an alley – to offering to buy the fruit and resell it to you. Better wash your fruit off REAL WELL.

2. Speaking of washing your fruit off REAL WELL. Fruit is often removed from orchards illegally. In the old pre-politically correct days this was known as STEALING and OUTRIGHT THIEVERY. These procurements are commonly done by what we call, "meth addicts" looking to sell their fruit for their next fix. Some of these low level rings have some organization to them. They "carry", not information about healing or self-help, but weapons – like ice picks and short lengths of chains with bundles of locks attached (for breaking into cars etc). That's Fake Farm Fruit Underground Marketplace in part: Fake Farm, Fake organic, stolen fruit – or fruit from unsanitary environments harvested by god-knows-who. It's the unvarnished truth about fake farms and "brokers" who can make a website and close it down once its discovered. There is no government oversite whatever, so you are on your own. Or rather, real farms such as us, are on our own.

3. Juice Bandits – here is an EXTREMELY disgusting group of FAKE FARMS. They are somewhat more sophisticated and larger. These are people who go into the large dumpsters at markets and remove fruit – and sell it to public – on the net and roadside stands. Usually, there's an inside guy. Its pretty simple and they move tons of fruit. Beware the Juice Bandits!

Those are most undesirable of the fake farms. They could even look like small time brokers, too, and say they gather from surrounding farms, but they need to be pressed on what farms, etc. Get contact numbers. If they do not have the time or the credentials, run like the wind, especially if they advertise Organic. Especially if their prices are higher than most: They figure someone is going to put them out of business (people who read this) and then they just create another website and change their name! It only cost about 2-10 dollars to get a domain name.

4. "Large Advertising Companies" do not legitimize a business. We advertise on Google, it is quite inexpensive, simple to do and anyone with a website can do it. That does not mean anything. Same with Amazon or any other venue. This net is huge and people and things appear and disappear at will. Produce vendors spring up on these sites and go away. Investigate the business.

Then There Are The True, Honest Fruit Brokers

Brokers do a service for small farms who would be buried by the volume of fake farms and fly-by-night operations.

What's a broker? Some industrious fellow or gal who starts hosting farms and when a sale goes through the broker receives a portion of the sale. They usually have some advanced computer skills and can write code, or someone does it for them.

The only trouble comes if the broker is not aware of where the fruit is coming from and then we relapse into the above scenarios of Backyards, Juice bandits and fruit thieves. I imagine most brokers investigate their sources. The quality issue is something left up to the farmers. A good brokering site can not afford bad publicity so they are pretty conscientious. We recommend LocalHarvest.org for ALL your online fruit, vegetable purchases as they stand behind their customers and farms alike. It's a good balance. Actually it's a great balance. We have been using them for years even though we have our own website.

Small Farm With Water Filled Swimming Pools

The other category is the "small farm" with a filled swimming pool (get their address and go to Google Maps) and you will see some vegetation, a pool, surrounded by farmland. I mean, no real farmer who has an inkling of knowledge about how precious water really is and will be will have a swimming pool filled with gin-clear water in today's world.

Legally, they have nowhere to empty them except on the property and if the farm is located close to the ocean, it heads in that direction: probably forbidden as farms overseen by federal ag departments have to 100 percent containment of all runoff.

Most pools are 30 thousands gallons to 50 thousons gallons of water. They need to be chemically treated with bleach, acids and a few other things. So what do they do when they have to empty the pool – and where does it go? I mean, com'mon. If they were truly a farm they would have to empty the water on the property and likely irrigate with it – which is of course damage in every direction. This flood of pool water increases salts which are a water table nightmare. Its like fracking your own property – but it also flows into your neighbor's well, too. Because the pool guy / hobby farmer does not have a well, they are clueless as to the end game which is a polluted water table for the real farmer.

But, there's nothing wrong with calling your two acres a farm – a hobby farm – and selling fruit off it for the tax break and extra income (if they claim it). After all, that's the American way.

If you're at all concerned about the environment, I would look around for a better, long term choice for the earth. As a residential property, they have absolutely no oversight – so their pets get to roam around and fertilize your expensive "Naturally fertilized", "expensive", "Organically Grown" avocados. Helicopters overspray on your "organic" avocado or passion fruit. And you have no clue as to the history of your fruit. None.

One large broker, one of first to offer anyone a cheap farm page – even if you lived in a trailer down by the riverside – now just redirects all their "farms" to Amazon and it becomes a workout hell to find out if the item is from a legitimate farm or just ANOTHER broker brokering another broker!

I had to go through three layers of brokers on one item we sold to finally get to the original distributor who, in answer to my question, "How do you know you are getting organic fruit?", Was, "We make sure by asking the farms for updated certification. " Yet they would not supply me with the names of the farms. Hmmmmm. Some were just brokers plain and simple and "got fruit from anywhere available, when it was available."

Small Time Brokers On Big Time Sites

Just by the items they sell, from candy bars and toys to passion fruit and wicker baskets, its pretty obvious they are finding whatever they can get a deal on and resell. So nix "from the farm" on these – that's my opinion. You can not manufacture a candy bar and sell organic fruit off a farm. Not in America, anyway. The EPA would fine you out of existence in hour one.

So if your sold "organic", say "prove it", "Give me a farm, give me a certification number and I will check it out on my own" – and make sure its current.

Yesterday an associate asked to be see if a property management ad company was legitimate. I Googled the email address (Google had no information on it, and any legal company will show up something) then I Googled the phone number and it came up INDIA. It took 30 seconds. Oh, I forgot to mention the guy advertising himself had bootlegged a local banner from a government site to include in his email.

So …

Just find a real farm. People who buy farm land care for the land. The jewels of fruit they create on your behalf – and theirs – and everything connected to the fruit and land, is precious to them.

Growing an Organic Garden the Easy Way

Growing an organic garden can be rewarding for those willing to put in the effort. If you use 100% organic products you will not have to wash off the chemicals and pesticides that could potentially potentially harmful before eating the fruit and vegetables.

The soil should be nutrient rich organic material like compost before attempting to plant any crops in it. It'll be easier to grow healthy and vigorous, pest resistant and disease resistant plants in nutrient rich soil, pesticides and chemicals are to avoid at all costs.

If the soil has been drained of all its nutrients it may need to be tested at your garden center. However many times just adding your own organic compost may be fine. You can either buy it at your garden shop or make it on your own by yourself with kitchen scraps and garden cuttings.

You can go to your garden shop and purchase cow or horse manure or make some homemade compost yourself. Compost left to decompose naturally is considered gold by gardeners. You can use your kitchen scraps and trimmings from your garden to make your organic compost.

You can gather your vegetable and fruit waste, coffee grounds and egg shells, but never add meat waste or your pets droppings as this will make the pile smell and attract other animals. Use garden clippings, grass cuttings, dead leaves and branches, but no weeds or diseased plants.

Choose a spot for your compost pile near your garden for your compost pile and dump your food and garden savings into it, cow or horse manure will add to the nutrients and make a compost fertilizer. Keep your compost pile moist, occasionally turning it in and for several months you should have nutrient rich black organic compost. Just remove any large undecomposed pieces of waste, and work the compost into the soil where you'll plant your crops.

Organic Vs Non Organic – A Real Look Into the Nutritional Value and Cost

Are you deciding whether to buy food organic or not? Do you question whether it is safer, more nutritious and worth the extra cost when a product bears a USDA Organic label? Several differences between organic and non-organic foods exist. Nutrition, quality, appearance, pesticides, environment, cost and taste are important factors to consider.

The word “organic” refers to food produced without most conventional pesticides; fertilizers made with synthetic ingredients or sewage sludge; bioengineering; or ionizing radiation. If it’s meat, the animal was raised without antibiotics and growth hormones and fed an organic diet. Before a product is labeled “organic” by the USDA it must meet strict government standards. These standards regulate how such foods are grown, handled and processed.. The seal also tells you a product is at least 95 percent organic. Made with organic ingredients are products that contain 70 percent organic ingredients. Foods containing less than 70 percent organic ingredients cannot use the organic seal or the word “organic” on their label.

Organic foods may have higher nutritional value than conventional food, according to some research. The soil is left in better condition after repeated planting and because you avoid ingesting pesticide residues left of conventional produce. Without pesticides and fertilizers plants increase their production of the phyto chemicals (vitamins and antioxidants) that strengthen their resistance to bugs and weeds. Studies have linked pesticides in our food to headaches, cancer, and birth defects. In meats and dairy products the concern is about the antibiotics being given to the farm animals. Many are the same antibiotics humans rely on and overuse of these drugs allow bacteria to develop resistance to them. Yet others scientists contend there is no conclusive evidence that organic food is more nutritious than conventionally grown food. Many experts maintain that the levels in conventional foods are safe for most healthy adults and poses a very small health risk. The USDA certifies organic food but does not claim these products are safer or more nutritious.

Organic and conventional foods meet the same quality and safety standards. The difference is how the food is produced, processed, and handled. Organic fruits and vegetables spoil faster because they are not treated with waxes or preservatives. Appearance may differ. Some organic produce may have odd shape, varying color, and smaller sizes. Mostly they look identical to their conventional counterpart.

Some people buy organic food for environmental reasons. Organic farming benefits the environment by reducing pollution and conserving water and soil.

Not everyone can afford to 100% organic every time we shop. There are ways to make room in your budget. Farmers’ Market have reasonably priced local grown organic and conventional food. Whether you are a fan of organic food or just want to shop more wisely here are a few added tips, Wash all fresh fruits and vegetables thoroughly with running water. This will reduce dirt and bacteria. If needed use a small scrub brush. Peeling fruits and vegetables may help to reduce pesticides but may also reduce the amount of fiber and nutrients.
